Introducing Jason [Guest Post]

Posted on

Time to meet a new doll! Here’s a guest post by my good friend Rick, with some help from his friend Jason:

Jason: Hi. I’m a Kidz’n’Cats “Alister”, but I answer to Jason. Sometimes I also answer to “Trouble”. Maybe I shouldn’t have told you that?

Rick: It’s just over two years since Jason arrived. Alex and Jamie had no small part to play in setting off the train of events. Like Alex, Jason is a Kidz’n’Cats “Alister”. He came to me from KR Bears and Dolls. I’d been warned about the pink box. The intense scent released when I opened the box was a bit of a surprise. It clung to Jason for quite a while.

Jason: Coming out of my box was quite an experience. I’d been well tied in, but eventually I was free. Then, it seemed, I needed a check-up, so my clothes had to come off, too. I was a bit shy about that, but I got dressed again as soon as I’d been given a full bill of health. It was too warm for my full outfit, so I left my coat and cap behind when I went off to explore my new home.

Jason Exploring

Here I am in looking at some flowers in the rock garden, and by a fireplace on a chilly day.

One set of clothes, even when it’s as good a set as I came in, only goes so far. I needed some other clothes.

Rick: I spent a while searching the Net, and saw a pair of overalls on Wren*Feathers that looked good. I bought the pattern, and some sewing spread over a few days turned an old shirt into a pair of overalls. They’re not quite as well-made as the ones shown on Wren*Feathers site, but that’s down to my sewing ability. Jason looks good in them. I also visited Nellie Rose’s site.

Jason: A few days later a nicely wrapped present arrived.

Jason's First From NellieRose

Rick: Here he is, sitting in a favourite spot modelling some of them.

Jason's New Clothes

Jason: When the weather turned colder I got another present. The hoodie was just what I needed for some more outdoors exploring. Take a look at this huge toadstool!

Jason's Second From Nellie Rose

Rick: Then, for a while, he seemed to have enough clothing to cover most occasions, and things settled down.

Jason: Some days I spend in the bedroom where I sleep, and other days I spend sitting in my favourite place. Sometimes I go out and about a bit. I’ve even been away at conventions on a couple of occasions. There I met others a bit like myself, but I didn’t manage to get any pictures of me with them, so you’ll just have to take my word for it.

Rick: Recently, I’ve been back to Nellie Rose again, and he now has a couple more outfits. He tends to mix and match things, and in this photo he was wearing one item from each of the three packages.

Jason' s Third From Nellie Rose

Jason: As you can see, I like my new clothes. I wonder whether I’ll have to wait another two years for some more.

Rick: I still have some un-finished sewing projects that may expand his wardrobe if I ever manage to complete them, but he seems happy enough with the clothes he has, for now…

Big thanks to Rick & Jason for that!

KR Bears & Dolls Limited Edition Zwergnase Junior Dolls

Posted on

A few months ago Trisha over at KR Bears & Dolls mentioned some very special Limited Edition dolls made exclusively for her, and finally there are more details on them and a sneak preview pic of the prototypes.

KR Bears & Dolls Limited Edition Zwergnase Juniors

As she couldn’t decide between blonde and red hair there are two dolls available,  limited to only 25 in total, so its definitely first come first served here. The dolls are named for Trisha and her sister Karen, Trisha being the redhead with green eyes, a green pinafore over a grey and black striped blouse, black tights, petticoat and boots. The blonde doll, Karen, has blue eyes, a multi-colour print pinafore over a red blouse, with stripey tights, navy petticoat and red boots. Each doll comes with a certificate.

I love the Zwergnase Junior dolls and it must have been so exciting to end up with limited edition ones bearing your name, so yay Trisha. You can pre-order the dolls, which will be available later this month, over at the KR Bears & Dolls website; a deposit is required.

Zwergnase Junior 2014 dolls

Posted on

Trisha over at KR Bears & Dolls has the upcoming range of Zwergnase Junior dolls for 2014 available to order. I think they’re the best looking set of dolls for a good few years from the Junior range, so I’m rather spoilt for choice and will be saving up! The range as ever has 50cm and 35cm dolls, and includes a boy doll for once, the first since the 2009 collection, I believe.

All the dolls have the usual quirky faces that make Zwergnase creations so unique, plus funky outfits which are no doubt to the expected high standard.

From left to right these are Agnes, Josef, Katja and Natalia, my personal favourites from the range. (Click the image for a larger version.)

You can get a sneak preview of the collector dolls over at KR too – definitely worth drooling over, there are no prices listed as yet but they’re usually beyond my budget, still, a girl can dream 🙂

Limited Edition Kidz n Cats – Henriette

Posted on

As mentioned previously, With Heart and Soul have not only moved their current manufacture of the Kidz n Cats dolls to Germany but their Berlin-based studio will produce a limited edition doll. And here she is:

KIdz n Cats Henriette

Named Henriette, she features a fifth face sculpt for the range, the first doll to feature this sculpt, and will be limited to just 300 dolls worldwide. Her outfit consists of long sleeved t-shirt, a brown cardigan, blue tulle skirt, borwn flowery scarf, brown tights and brown boots. She comes with a brown messenger bag and blue hair ribbon.

As well as Sonja Hartmann’s signature and a limited edition certificate, she is unique by being the first Wunschpuppe, or Wish doll in the range – that is, you can customise her hair and eyes to order. The hair options as pictured below are blonde, golden brown and mid brown and the eye colour choices are blue, brown and green/grey.

The limited edition customised doll will only be available to order between 14th September and 6th October, with the finished dolls expected to be available for delivery towards the end of November. Once the limited edition run has finished, Henriette will join the rest of the Kidz n Cats range in the standard blonde hair and blue eyes combination featured in the photographs.

She’s a lovely addition to the Kidz n Cats range and the option to pick hair and eye colour makes it likely the limited edition will sell out swiftly, especially with the time constraints on ordering, so hurry up if you want a specific combination to make her truly yours!

Limited edition Henriette is currently available to order from My Doll Best Friend and KR Bears & Dolls

Jessie – Zwergnase Junior

Posted on

The sheer variety of dolls out there is astounding, and although I’m more focused on play dolls I’m very aware of the various limited edition collectors dolls available, hand-scuplted by talented doll designers, usually in small quantities and with a price tag to match. One of the most unusual doll ranges is the Zwergnase dolls, created by Nicole Marschollek Menzer. Her dolls have odd, yet appealing faces, rather fey in look, or cheeky faces with freckles or buck teeth, wild hair – once you’ve seen one you won’t forget them. Nicole studied design and toy creation in her native Germany and founded the Zwergnase company in Sonneberg in 1994, with a range of dolls of varying sizes and prices released each year. I love the way she seems to capture the essence of a child in each sculpt, a moment in time or in a life, that really draws the attention and the heart.

Lckily for me, Nicole also has a range of play dolls, the Zwergnase Junior collection, with new designs each year both 50cm and 35cm tall, with the outfits available separately.

Jessie posing

Which leads me to Jessie, who is a 50cm Zwergnase Junior Dorte doll from the 2011 collection. She has the instantly recognisable unique little face, in the this case with red hair and freckles and a curious expression. Her hair is shoulder length, with two braids, and though good quality doesn’t easily lend itself to styling.

Jessie has jointed arms and legs and a very poseable head joint, and is slightly taller than the other play dolls. The height is mainly in the legs, she has long legs and the body shape of an older child, with a slender waist and alittle pot belly, though she can share clothes with the other 18″ dolls, apart from them occasionally being too short in the legs. Her arms are long and graceful.

Dorte (official photo)

Her original outfit consists of a long, sleeveless cotton dress with a bold print in dark red, purple, blue and brown, with a dark red net underskirt designed to show below the hem of the dress. Included are a pair of soft beige knickers and beige suede lace up boots with white socks. I love the look of the Zwergnase Junior clothes but the quality of this particular outfit didn’t seem quite as good as what I’ve come to expect from the Kidz n Cats dolls, which has put me off getting any of the other outfits thus far. She arrived in a cloth bag rather than tied into a box, which is unusual but pleasing as a packing option.

Unlike most dolls available, the Zwergnase Junior dolls do not have glass eyes but rather hand painted ones. Now sometimes this can look rather dead and unnerving (the eyes on the Sigikid Die Puppe dolls sometimes have this fault), but as you can see with Jessie, her eyes are lively and interesting, great care has clearly been taken with the paintbrush to ensure the eyes add to her character.

Portrait of Jessie

Jessie is one of those dolls who looks very different depending on what she is wearing, and her expression gives great scope to the imagination. She looks quite the mature young lady in the above image, wearing an outfit from an Ebay designer which you might recognise from the post about Alice.  In the  first image below, she’s wearing a white broderie sun dress with matching shoes from Frilly Lily, contrasted with the next shot of her in a boyish outfit from the Argos Design-a-Friend range.

The dolls are more expensive than the Kidz n Cats and the lower ranges of Gotz dolls, on a par with Gotz Classic Kidz however, and I think are definitely worth the extra price for the unusual look – I think quirky is the best word to describe them, and any of the Junior dolls would make a good friend for a slightly older child, Jessie is certainly one of my favourites and I’m sure there will be another in the range joining my collection at some point.

Thus far in the UK the only supplier I know of is Trisha at KR Bears & Dolls, who has many of the Junior dolls in stock, and can easily order past dolls and outfits. I note she has an exclusive limited edition Junior doll being made specially, which is sure to be worth a look. She also stocks the collector dolls from various years as well as the current range, well worth browsing, if you can resist the temptation that is!
